The course explores the basic principles and processes in the evolution of Earth, and covers topics in geology, meteorology, oceanography, and astronomy. It will focus on the connections and interrelationships between the four earth sciences and their historical development. Special emphasis will be placed on examples from the Pacific Northwest.

Course Objectives:

  • Apply the scientific method and the metric system to the earth sciences
  • Describe the solar system and its components, layout, and history.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the complexities of Earth's atmosphere and the major variables and controls of weather and climate.
  • Identify and classify the basic minerals and rocks.
  • Apply the theory of plate tectonics to the location of volcanoes, earthquakes, and other geologic features.
  • Relate various geologic features to the surface processes of water, wind, and ice.
